Some houses are designed on paper. Villa A-Frame was designed in the mountains, decision by decision, as the structure rose from the ground.
Villa A-Frame sits in Edsåsdalen, a quiet valley in the Åre mountains, where architect Måns Tham and homeowner Anders Lindström created something rare: a house that responds directly to its surroundings rather than imposing a pre-made design onto them. The A-frame shape mirrors the mountain ridges. The south-facing wall is entirely glass, pulling in light and views across the valley. The north side is solid larch, shielding the interior from wind and weather.
Inside, every surface — floors, walls, ceilings — is paneled in the same larch wood, fitted without trim or molding. Corners meet seamlessly, and the material runs unbroken throughout the five-bedroom villa.
"We didn't draw everything in advance. Måns and I made decisions on-site as the structure went up. The fireplace location, the window placements, the way the bedrooms connect to the landscape — those were choices we made by standing in the space and seeing what felt right."— Anders Lindström, homeowner
That process was documented in a 2020 episode of Grand Designs Sverige and more recently explored in Residence Magazine, where the emphasis was on how the villa's design evolved during construction rather than being finalized beforehand. The approach required trust between architect and owner — but it also allowed the building to adapt to the site in ways a finished plan never could.
The result is a villa that feels less like a typical mountain rental and more like a piece of architecture that happens to accommodate guests.
More about the design and construction process can be found in the Residence Magazine profile and the Grand Designs Sverige feature.
The central fireplace — a modern tiled installation — anchors the main living area, where a built-in sofa seats 15. Three bedroom suites, each with its own bathroom and lounge furniture, are distributed across two floors. A sauna for eight, a jacuzzi, and direct ski-in ski-out access to Edsåsdalen's slopes complete the setup. The villa accommodates up to 14 guests. Åre centre is 20 minutes by car.
"I wanted it rented properly, not just listed somewhere and forgotten. The kind of people who appreciate what we built here are the same kind of people Martin works with. It made sense to have someone curating who stays here rather than just maximizing bookings."— Anders Lindström
