The menu is classic Swedish: Toast Skagen with hand-peeled shrimp, cold-smoked salmon, fresh waffles, and a legendary cake buffet that's hard to walk past. In summer, the garden terrace fills up quickly, with views across the water and an atmosphere that is entirely unhurried. A natural stop on any visit to Vaxholm, whether arriving by boat or by car.

One of Stockholm's most enduring institutions, Ulla Winbladh has been serving classic Swedish cuisine on the island of Djurgården since the 1950s — in a building originally constructed for the 1897 World Fair. The menu is a celebration of Swedish tradition: Toast Skagen, pickled herring, meatballs, fried strömming. The setting is as charming as the food — parkland surroundings, a terrace for summer evenings, and interiors that feel genuinely rooted in another era. Listed in the Michelin Guide as a Bib Gourmand. One of Stockholm's most sought-after restaurants — a two-Michelin-star experience on the waterfront of Djurgården, led by chefs Tommy Myllymäki and Pi Le. Stockholm's iconic waterfront amusement park, perched on the island of Djurgården just minutes from the city centre. One of Europe's oldest amusement parks, it combines classic fairground charm with thrilling rides, stunning harbour views, and a legendary concert stage that has hosted some of the world's biggest artists. A summer staple for both locals and visitors alike.

Not everything in a great archipelago day needs to be a three-course meal. Glass på Hörnet occupies a corner spot right on Vaxholm's harbour, in the best possible position: you step off the boat and it's practically the first thing you see. The ice cream is homemade gelato in around 20 flavours, with Italian coffee alongside — simple, carefully made, and popular enough that a queue is entirely normal on a summer afternoon. Vaxholm itself is one of the most characterful stops in the inner archipelago, with its fortress island, wooden townhouses and working harbour, and a scoop from Glass på Hörnet on the quayside is as good a way as any to take it all in.

A classic archipelago inn on Ingmarsö — one of those places you can only reach by boat, which is precisely part of the appeal. Ingmarsö Krog serves seasonal Swedish food in a genuine skärgård setting, with its own dock for arriving guests and four mooring buoys for boats up to 6,500 kg. The gästhamn 200 metres away offers an additional 30 berths with showers, sauna and electricity.

A 16th-century fortress on its own island just off Vaxholm — one of the most atmospheric places to spend an afternoon in the Stockholm archipelago. Wander the historic walls, visit the Vaxholm Fortress Museum, and stop for lunch at Bistro Kastellet's courtyard terrace with archipelago air on all sides. In summer, the neighbouring island of Badholmen opens as a beach club.
